A business of Hantec Group and headquartered in Hong Kong, Hantec Markets (Australia) provides trading services in foreign exchange, bullion contracts and derivatives. The business has more than 100 employees globally and about 15 in Australia, according to Arthur Chau, IT Officer, Hantec Markets (Australia). “We have been in this market for eight years, and outstripped our competitors in transparency and range of products and services,” he says.

Challenges: Overcome scalability and security issues

Hantec Markets (Australia) had an initial setup that consisted of colocating servers, storage, networking and associated systems in racks in a telecommunications provider’s hosted data centre. The telecommunications operator also provided internet and regional Wide Area Network (WAN) connectivity to the fledgling financial business. “The data centre was quite small and we needed space to scale to support growth in customer demand,” says Chau. “In addition, we were the victim of a distributed denial of service attack at one point that knocked our service offline. We had complaints from customers who could not access our platform and we had to undertake some manual trading on their behalf as a temporary measure.”
The business reviewed its hosting options and decided to migrate its infrastructure to another infrastructure hosting and internet connectivity provider. “We considered the brands of prospective providers because we knew that those with a good reputation would have invested in their infrastructure to deliver high availability and performance,” says Chau. “We also discussed our options with industry experts and once we had decided on likely candidates, talked to the sales teams of businesses such as NTT ICT.”

Hantec Markets (Australia) ruled out some prospective suppliers due to the fact it would take a technical expert more than an hour to arrive at the data centre once monitoring systems had signalled a problem. “Availability was key to us in order to meet the demands of our clients, and we needed to ensure that our service provider could respond to issues within minutes,” says Chau.

The fact that many other Hantec Group businesses in Asia were successfully using NTT Communications services, and the fact that with NTT ICT, Hantec Markets (Australia) could source data centre colocation, Internet, global Wide Area Network (WAN), maintenance, hardware and software from a single supplier, prompted the financial services business to place the provider at the top of its shortlist. “We are a small office with many diverse demands on our technology team,” says Chau. “Using a single vendor for all these activities would minimise the time myself and other team members had to spend managing vendor relationships.”

The Hantec Markets (Australia) technology team later visited the NTT ICT data centre to see how much space it could potentially scale into, and the quality of the provider’s network infrastructure.

Solution: Hantec Markets (Australia) moves to NTT ICT

In 2014, Hantec Markets (Australia) signed an agreement with NTT ICT to move to the NTT ICT’s Australian data centre. NTT ICT is now equipping the financial services business with data centre infrastructure co-location services, internet and WAN connectivity over a Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) network between Australia, Hong Kong and Japan.
Hantec Markets (Australia) is also now using NTT ICT’s maintenance and support services, and purchasing hardware and software from leading vendors directly through NTT ICT.

WHEN WE HAVE PHONED THEM WITH MORE URGENT REQUESTS,
THEY HAVE RESPONDED IN MINUTES

Benefits: A single supplier with secure, reliable services

Hantec Markets (Australia) is now reaping the benefits of dealing with a single supplier for a range of technology requirements. In addition, NTT ICT’s security and reliability means the financial services provider has not experienced an outage since moving to NTT ICT’s data centre in Australia. “I feel extremely comfortable with their security, availability and service levels,” says Chau. “Rather than worry about our hosting services, or spend time liaising with multiple suppliers, myself and other technology team members can instead focus on building our business in the Australian market and internationally.”
Chau has used NTT ICT’s support services, and vouches for their responsiveness. “We have received technical-skilled support within our service level agreement and business requirements when we have contacted through them through the NTT ICT portal,” he says. “When we have phoned them with more urgent requests, they have responded in minutes.”

RATHER THAN WORRY ABOUT OUR HOSTING SERVICES, OR SPEND TIME LIAISING WITH MULTIPLE SUPPLIERS, MYSELF AND OTHER TECHNOLOGY TEAM MEMBERS CAN INSTEAD FOCUS ON BUILDING OUR BUSINESS IN THE AUSTRALIAN MARKET AND INTERNATIONALLY

Hantec Markets’ own firewall and security systems complement the provider’s monitoring of its own network for abnormal activity, minimising the risk of data leakage or theft, or service disruption. In addition, the extensive physical security at NTT ICT’s data centre gives extra reassurance.

“Another benefit I find from working with NTT ICT include the ease of obtaining access to hardware and software I can purchase directly from them rather than have to shop around to multiple vendors,” Chau says. “Overall, so far, we are very satisfied with the service provided by NTT ICT and look forward to continuing to work with them in future.”
