Is your IT Service Provider an innovator or following the crowd  | NTT ICTCloud deployment across Australia seems to be moving past the zenith of the ‘hype cycle,’ with growing acceptance across multiple sectors.  Even so, the quantity of cloud computing services on offer (and the service providers offering them) has exploded in the last few years. Everything as a Service (XaaS) is the order of the day, bringing you everything that can be offered as a cloud-based IT service. Cloud Providers that want to survive in this highly competitive environment are looking at how the advent of cloud-based services will affect how they provide their traditional services.

The history of NTT Communications goes back to 1952, when it was established as the national (government owned) provider of telecommunications services across Japan. There has been a lot of water under the bridge since then, but fast-forward to 1999 when the ‘NTT Network Innovation Laboratories’ was first established to research a wide range of communications and software technologies.  NTT Communications is now a global Tier-1 Network Provider, offering a suite of data centre services. There is no shortage of Cloud Services providers.  If you’re concerned about the longevity of your Cloud solution, or the company that is providing your service, take a closer look at their service pedigree. 

How long has this company been in business? 

How financially secure are they? 

How long have they been providing similar services? 

How happy are their customers? 

Can they offer like-for-like services across multiple geographies? 

How tightly integrated are their multiple service offerings?             

Japanese companies lead the way in the development of new products, vastly reducing the time it takes to bring new technologies to market.  This allows new technologies to be sufficiently tested before their general release, helping to ensure they are stable and fit for purpose.  For example, NTT Communications’ Enterprise Cloud (a public cloud platform designed for enterprises, with many of the features of a private cloud) was the first global Cloud platform to offer SDN (Software Defined Networking) as a standard feature. NTT Innovation is now looking to provide a ‘Cloud services orchestration’ platform that lets customers decide which apps to move to the cloud, then move and maintain them.

Look beyond the hype.  Most of us by now have heard of the concepts of ‘public’ and ‘private’ cloud, and everything in between. If a service provider is promoting only public or only private cloud as the solution to all of your problems, you’re only getting half of the story.  NTT’s entry into Cloud began well before it was called Cloud, offering managed virtualization services across multiple geographies.  For all of this time NTT has been integrating these services with traditional hosting based on (dedicated) physical hosted servers as well as our network; in true hybrid fashion. 

There are many providers out there that can sell you a Cloud.  Your provider needs to know the problem, you, the customer, are trying to solve before they can offer you the solution. This is how we run our business at NTT ICT.
